Autism

Autism:  Autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life and affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills. Autism is a spectrum condition. This means that while all people with autism share certain difficulties, the condition affects each person differently. There is no known cure at present (April 2017) for Autism.

One of the best known forms of autism is Asperger syndrome. People with the condition are often of average or above-average intelligence. They have fewer speech problems than people with other types of autism, but may find it difficult to understand and process language.

The exact causes of this disorder remain unknown. There are probably combinations of factors that lead to autism. Genetic factors seem to be important. For example identical twins are much more likely than fraternal twins or siblings to both have autism. Similarly, language abnormalities are more common in relatives of autistic children. Chromosomal abnormalities and other nervous system (neurological) problems are also more common in families with autism.

A number of other possible causes have been suspected but not proven. They include diet, digestive tract changes, mercury poisoning, and the body's inability to properly use vitamins and minerals and vaccine sensitivity.

Autism features can often be recognised in children before the age of two or three years. However for many, the signs will often only become more noticeable as they get older. See your doctor or health visitor if you are concerned about your child’s development. You can discuss your concerns together in depth before deciding whether your child should be referred for specialist assessment. It can also be helpful to discuss your concerns with your child’s nursery or school.
